What is diabetes

Diabetes is an unfortunately common condition that seems to be getting diagnosed more and more. If you, a family member, or a friend has been diagnosed with the disease, you might be wondering, what is diabetes? Fortunately, there are many places to educate yourself on what diabetes is. If you’re asking yourself what is diabetes, there are many places to start looking, and many informational materials you can read.

The first thing you know when asking what is diabetes is what type of diabetes you want to learn about. There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes can affect anybody without warning. Type 1 diabetes is when the beta cells in your pancreas no longer make insulin. Insulin is a protein that is absolutely necessary in the regulation of glucose, or blood sugar level. Type 2 diabetes has a different sort of genesis. The pancreas still produces insulin, but the body is not responsive to the insulin, or it has reduced insulin sensitivity. It’s not quite known what causes type 2 diabetes, but it can be treated with a change in exercise and eating habits, as well as weight-loss. Most people with type 2 diabetes need to cut out all foods that are high in sugar or carbohydrates.
