Vitamin D

Vitamin d plays an important role in the maintenance of the organs in the human body. Vitamin d promotes absorption of calcium and phosphorous in the body, and thus, acts to regulate the amounts of both. Vitamin d promotes bone formation, and vitamin d helps the immune system by promoting immunosuppression.  Immunosuppression is when one part of the immune system suppresses another part, and this can be important during organ transplants and the treatment of certain diseases.

Vitamin d is mainly produced in the skin, with the help of UVB radiation. If you do not go in the sun often, or live in a place with a high amount of smog or pollution, you might need to take vitamin d supplements, or find an alterative source for vitamin d.  Also, vitamin d synthesis may be inhibited depending on the season, latitude or your location, or even UV blocking sunscreen.  Vitamin d is not commonly found in many foods. Most vitamin d intake comes from dairy products, soy products, or cereal grains. These foods are fortified with vitamin d. Natural sources of vitamin d include some fish, fish liver oils, and eggs. For many, supplements that include vitamin d are the easiest and most convenient way to get the daily-recommended allowance of vitamin d.
