Vitamin C

Vitamin c is a highly effective antioxidant in the body. An antioxidant slows or prevents the oxidation of molecules. The oxidation reactions can create free radicals, which can ultimately damage other cells. Vitamin c slows or prevents this process from happening, and thus, saves cells from damage. Fruits and vegetables are the best natural sources for vitamin c. Some sorts of meat are good sources for vitamin c, especially liver. More often than not, people get their daily-recommended allowance of vitamin c through vitamin c supplements. Vitamin c supplements are widely available in pills, powders, gels, liquids, and more. Vitamin c is often taken by people who fight head colds or to stave them off.

Vitamin c supplements can be especially beneficial because it is difficult to measure just how much vitamin c is going to be absorbed from any one fruit or vegetable, especially since the amount of vitamin c in a plant can vary for a number of reasons. Also, there is not much vitamin c present in animal muscle, which makes up most of the meat in your diet.

One commonly documented result of vitamin c deficiency is scurvy. The modern, western diet is healthy enough in vitamin c that the recorded instances of scurvy are very low.
