Type 1 diabetes is also known as juvenile diabetes and childhood diabetes. Type 1 diabetes develops when the beta cells in the pancreases stops making insulin. Insulin is the protein your body needs to regulate the amount of glucose being absorbed by the muscles and organs. The regulation of glucose is an extremely important function because glucose is used by every cell in the body as an energy source, and type 1 diabetes makes that regulation impossible. There is no way to stop type 1 diabetes from developing, or predict who will have type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes seems to be genetic, and it is more common in certain ethnic groups than others, but beyond that, there are no set risk factors for type 1 diabetes. People who have type 1 diabetes might look completely healthy, and be entirely healthy in all other respects. Type 1 diabetes was once known as juvenile or childhood diabetes because it often began in childhood, rather than developing later in life. Indeed, one of the risk factors for type 1 diabetes is being a child over the age of ten. Type 1 diabetes can only be treated with the injection of insulin. Some people use syringes to regulate and control the amount of insulin in their bodies. Other people rely on insulin pumps. A method for taking insulin orally has recently been approved by the FDA.
