The teenage years are some of the most important in their life. These are the times when emotional crisis, bodily changes, relationships, and other stressful things begin. By teaching teenagers good habits in this stage, they will hopefully be instituted throughout their lives. For example, by helping teenagers get through the difficult emotional times, teaching them proper eating habits, teaching them about their bodies and how to be safe, and showing them the negative effects of substance abuse, they can make educated decisions for themselves about the paths they wish to take. Much of the power struggle between parents and teens is about freedom. Granting teens certain amounts of freedom can actually improve their health by allowing them to make choices, and learn from them. In the short run, some mistakes may be made, however the long term effects may help them more than showing them how to live. Much of teen health is educating them about their bodies. Online rescources, books, and family discussions can help with this. Being honest with teenagers is essential to gaining their trust, and discussing their sexuality with them will be uncomfortable, but they will appreciate the honesty.
