Stretching Exercises
Stretching exercises are important for many reasons, but two of the most important reasons are to prevent injuries, and treat injuries. Stretching can increase flexibility, making muscles less tense and therefore less prone to injury. Stretching has been shown to increase performance in sports, and decrease recovery time from sports related injuries. There are three main forms of stretching, called static, bouncing, and PNF. The last two should be reserved for advanced cases, because if done incorrectly, can cause massive amounts of muscle damage. Static stretching is safe, and works well for anyone looking to gain flexibility. Stretching exercises can be performed in many man, and many exercises are available. To effectively stretch the desired area, hold the position for ten to fifteen seconds, and repeat three to five times. If the stretching position is released early, results will not be as apparent. Much of the problem with stretching exists in people's impatience. Stretching exercises, unlike some other types of exercises, take a long time to provide noticeable improvements. Instead of taking weeks to show results, it may take months to notice the differences in flexibility. However, by continuing to stretch, progress will be made, and your muscles will not only be more flexible, but less prone to injury.
