Sports medicine

Sports medicine is the area of medicine dedicated to the treatment and prevention of injuries in professional and amateur athletes. The term sports medicine was coined in 1928 at the International Congress of Sports Medicine, but the concept of sports medicine has been around since the time of ancient Greece. The Greeks placed a strong emphasis on physical fitness and sports, and most of the athletes in the ancient world were cared for by specialists. Sports medicine is multi-disciplinary, and sports medicine specialists are expected to treat athletes and all matter of injuries, as well as help prevent injuries, and to prepare athletes for competition.

Sports medicine can encompass a wide array of specialties because of the nature of sports and of the position. Sports medicine is often seen as orthopedic in nature, but that's actually a very limited view of sports medicine to take. Sports medicine can easily include cardiology, biomechanics, and traumatology, to name but a very few examples. A sports medicine specialist is often the leader of an entire sports medicine team, which includes everybody from the physician to the surgery specialists to the coach and athlete. Sports medicine specialists are also in charge of the controlled substances available to an athlete and is expected to check for "doping" or steroid use.
