Reactive hypoglycemia

Reactive hypoglycemia is the medical term for the condition of persistent hypoglycemia that happens after a large, high-carbohydrate meal. Hypoglycemia is when the glucose level in the blood dips below the appropriate amounts, and it can have several affects on the body. Reactive hypoglycemia is thought to be a result of excessive insulin that continues to act after the digestion of a high-carbohydrate meal. It is difficult to say how many people suffer from reactive hypoglycemia, because there is some controversy over how to diagnose reactive hypoglycemia. Also, some people can manifest symptoms of reactive hypoglycemia without actually having the condition.

Symptoms for reactive hypoglycemia include fatigue, headaches, cravings for sweets, irritability, increased appetite, nervousness, and sweating. The combination of physical and mental symptoms is due to the fact that glucose is necessary for the brain to function. When a person is has reactive hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, the functions of the brain are slowed or interrupted.

There is a range of underlying causes for reactive hypoglycemia, and some people who suffer from the condition are pre-diabetes. Other causes for reactive hypoglycemia might be hormonal in nature, or some sort of hereditary fructose intolerance.

There is also a range of treatment for reactive hypoglycemia, including eating small meals every three hours, exercising regularly, and avoiding foods that are high in sugar or carbohydrates.
