Protein Foods

Protein foods include meats, dairy, nuts, and legumes. Fruits and vegetables are not generally considered high protein foods. Protein foods are good sources of protein, and a good way to reach the recommended daily allowance of protein. Protein foods are also good sources of energy. Protein foods are the primary sources of energy and calories on low carbohydrate or high protein diets.

Protein foods should be eaten in moderation, though some people choose to eat high protein foods and exclude other types of food for a variety of reason. It’s widely believed by people that high protein foods will help an athlete gain muscle mass when in weight training or strength training. That claim is actually disputed by some doctors and scientists, who claim that the extra protein in high protein foods is just burned quickly as energy or ultimately excreted. Others claim that eating a diet of primarily of protein foods may lead to long-term health risks, especially involving the kidneys. But recent research indicates that diets of mainly protein foods does not cause renal or failure or otherwise complicate kidney functions in people who do not have a pre-existing condition.
