Protein Diet

A protein diet is not necessarily a low-carbohydrate diet, though the two terms can often be used interchangeably. Protein diets are often used by bodybuilders to help build muscle mass while they are in weight or strength training. There is some controversy over the effectiveness of protein diets, though. Some scientists argue that protein diets do not necessarily result in greater muscle mass, but rather, the extra protein from the protein diet is burned as energy or otherwise excreted. There is also some debate over the long-term health impact from a protein diet. It has long been thought that a high protein diet could result in renal failure, or problems with liver dysfunction. Recent research has indicated that kidneys do not fail as a result of a high protein diet, but that there is only problems if you have a pre-existing condition.

A protein diet consists of meat, legumes, nuts, dairy, and even fruits and vegetables. A protein diet can be varied, and the recent low-carb craze has put more high-protein alternatives on the market, like protein bars, protein shakes, and flours that are made from nuts and soy.

If you start a protein diet, or you are looking into one, it might be best to speak to a dietician or a nutritionist. They can better tell you what would be most beneficial for body and lifestyle.
