Protein

Protein is an organic compound made of amino acids. There are twenty amino acids that are necessary for several organic processes in the body, but not all twenty amino acids are naturally occurring in most animals’ bodies, including humans. As a result, the necessary protein we need to survive must be ingested from other protein sources—usually meat, though meat is not the only source of protein. Other sources of protein include eggs, grains, legumes, and dairy products. Different amino acids come from different protein sources, so a variety of food is necessary to get all the required protein and amino acids.

Protein is also important for body builders, athletes, and anybody who wants to build muscle mass. High protein, low carbohydrate diets are also possible right now because the body can make and store energy from diets that are primarily protein. Some doctors warn that a diet too high in protein can cause problems for the heart and kidney.

There is a minimum daily requirement of protein for both men and women. Men are required to consume more protein because most men have more muscle mass than women. Those are just general guidelines, though. A person’s protein need is dictated by how active a person is. Somebody who works out a great deal or does a lot of high-energy work would require more protein than somebody who does not.
