It is important to maintain normal blood sugar levels because serious consequences and illness can result from high blood sugar levels as well as low blood sugar levels. The term “blood sugar” refers to the levels of glucose in the blood plasma. Glucose is a basic sugar that is used by cells in the muscles and organs as a source of energy. Normal blood sugar levels indicates that the body is regulating blood sugar levels like it should, without any problems. The body is designed to regulate blood sugar levels very closely, and any deviation in the amount of glucose present can have a major impact on how the body functions. Hyperglycemia is when blood sugar levels are higher than normal blood sugar levels. Hypoglycemia is when blood sugar levels are lower than normal blood sugar levels. Prolonged hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia can lead to very serious and dangerous consequences. Some things that can affect normal blood sugar levels are lack of insulin, low insulin sensitivity, diabetes treatments, reactive hypoglycemia, and the amount and types of food. Obesity and activity, or the lack thereof, can also have a major impact on normal blood sugar levels, and some postulate that obesity is one of the cause of type 2 diabetes, also known as adult onset diabetes.
