Low blood sugar is a condition commonly referred to as hypoglycemia, and it can be a consequence or complication of diabetes treatment. The blood plasma carries glucose throughout the body, as the main source of energy. Glucose is also absolutely necessary for your brain to function. Low blood sugar can have adverse neurological effects, and some symptoms of low blood sugar include fatigue, confusion, irritability, stupor, and even coma. Coma and stupor are extreme reactions for low blood sugar, but each one is possible, especially if the low blood sugar is a result of complications from diabetes. Other physical symptoms for low blood sugar are sharp hunger, nausea, abdominal discomfort, shaking, sweating, and pallor. When low blood sugar is chronic, or pathologic, it is called hypoglycemia. Sometimes the cause for low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia, can be hard to diagnose, and thus, to treat. One way to trace back the source of the problem is to take what is known as a critical blood sample. The critical blood sample is taken at the time of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), before the hypoglycemia is reversed. If taken at the right time, it can provide information that might otherwise be only available after fasting tests.
