When the body does not respond to normal levels of insulin, it is known as insulin resistance. Insulin resistance in the liver and insulin resistance in the muscles leads to elevated glucose levels in the blood plasma. Diabetes type 2 is often a result of elevated insulin and glucose in the blood plasma due to insulin resistance. The causes of insulin resistance aren’t well known. Some suspect that insulin resistance is a result of a high carbohydrate diet, but there is no conclusive scientific proof for that. Plus, a certain percent of the population seems to have insulin resistance encoded in the DNA, that is, it is genetic. The fact that Diabetes type 2 is often hereditary seems to support that genetics can cause insulin resistance. There are some associated conditions with insulin resistance. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, an abnormal sedentary lifestyle, and certain drugs, like alcohol, are all linked to insulin resistance. The primary treatment for insulin resistance is a change in diet and weight loss. People who eat a high carbohydrate diet may need to switch to a low carbohydrate diet to bring their insulin resistance under control. Other treatments for insulin resistance include certain medications that are also used to treat type 2 diabetes. Growth hormone therapies can make insulin resistance worse.
