An insulin pump is a medical devise used as a replacement, or an alternative to, daily insulin injections. An insulin pump allows for intensive insulin therapy, and it is generally used in conjunction with a low carbohydrate diet. There are three parts of an insulin pump. An insulin pump includes the actual pump, a disposable reservoir of insulin, and an infusion set. The infusion set on an insulin pump includes a cannula for insertion under the skin. That is how the insulin pump can provide a continuous source of insulin for the body. The insulin pump is also fast acting, so it affects the body quicker than the standard injection technique. This means the insulin pump can allow for more freedom from a strict diet and exercise regiment. An insulin pump is also more discreet than a needle. If you are eating in public or with friends or associates, the insulin pump will act without anybody noticing. This is much less intrusive than breaking out the insulin kit and needle. Insulin resistance Insulin resistance is often a precursor, and a cause, for type 2 diabetes. Insulin Insulin regulates the amount of glucose in the blood and is used for carbohydrate metabolism. |
