Hypoglycemia is a condition where there is not enough glucose in the blood, or low blood sugar. The biggest consequence of hypoglycemia is the brain not getting enough glucose for proper functioning. As a result, hypoglycemia has several side effects, including simply “feeling bad” to, in more serious cases, coma and death. But coma and death rarely result from hypoglycemia, it is just on the spectrum of possibility. Hypoglycemia most often is the result of complications arising from treatment for diabetes. If insulin or other oral medications are not taken properly, it can have serious effects on the blood sugar, which could lead to either hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia. Hyperglycemia is the opposite of hypoglycemia. While hypoglycemia means low blood sugar, hyperglycemia means there is too much glucose in the blood stream. Like hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia can be attributed to complications arising from diabetes. Hypoglycemia can be diagnosed by measuring the glucose levels in the blood. It also reveals itself with a series of symptoms, such as shaking, trembling, sweating, and pallor. Other manifestations of hypoglycemia include belligerence, a change in personality, fatigue, irritability, and even a stupor. Unfortunately, there is no consistent order of symptoms when it comes to hypoglycemia, and further, each attack of hypoglycemia can manifest itself differently. Symptoms also vary from person to person due to age, weight, and other considerations. |
