Hyperglycemia is a condition where blood sugar levels are consistently high. Your blood sugar level is the amount of glucose present in the blood stream. Glucose is the main source of energy for your cells, and it is distributed through the body via the blood stream. Glucose is also very highly regulated by your body with the use of insulin. Because your cells use glucose as an energy source for chemical reactions, too much or too little glucose can have serious effects. When there is too much glucose, it is called hyperglycemia. When there is too little glucose, it is called hypoglycemia. Both are serious problems, especially if left undiagnosed and untreated. Persistent hyperglycemia is generally caused by diabetes. Diabetes can even cause continual hyperglycemia during fasting, when the body is not consuming any new glucose. Another cause of hyperglycemia is eating a diet that is very high in simple or complex carbohydrates. If you consume the majority of your calories in the form of carbohydrates, you are more vulnerable to hyperglycemia. Signs of hyperglycemia include frequent, pronounced hunger, frequent, pronounced thirst, exhaustion, fatigue, chronic infections, dry mouth, weight loss, and impotence in males. In order to treat hyperglycemia, the underlying cause must be diagnosed and treated. For example, in the case of people who have diabetic hyperglycemia, the diabetes would be treated.
