Health Food

If you ask ten different people what “health food” is, you might get eleven different answers. Health food is a rather nebulous term that can refer to almost any fad diet currently being marketed. And there are other issues that cloud the question and make finding an answer absurdly difficult.

For example, most people believe that low-fat food is a health food. However, almost all low-fat foods are high in sugar. Sugar is a simple carbohydrate that is broken down immediately in your body and provides short bursts of energy, but you wouldn’t want to eat a big bowl of sugar for breakfast if you are trying to lose weight. Some health food is marketed as health food, but health food is not a specially designated term, nor is it policed.

Health food tends to be short-hand for food that will help you lose weight. But skinny and healthy are not synonymous terms, and food can be healthy even if it doesn’t necessarily contribute to weight loss. Health food should be balanced. Health food should provide vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Health food should also be varied. It is not healthy to eat the same one or two things every single day.
