Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes found in pregnant women who never suffered from diabetes before. It is not known what causes gestational diabetes, but most doctors believe that it the increase of hormones that make women less sensitive to insulin. There are two different types of gestational diabetes. The first type of gestational diabetes, type A1, can be controlled and treated with a modified diet. The second type of gestational diabetes, type A2, requires insulin or other medications. Gestational diabetes is even further broken down by type and by the stage acquired during the pregnancy. There are many different risk factors associated with gestational diabetes. The maternal age is a key one. The older a woman is, the more likely she is to develop gestational diabetes. Also, if there is a family history of type 2 diabetes, a pregnant woman may be more like to develop gestational diabetes. Two other key risk factors for gestational diabetes are smoking, which doubles the chances, and if the woman suffered from gestational diabetes during a previous pregnancy. Frequently, women with gestational diabetes do not show any of the common symptoms. A test is done for gestational diabetes between the 24th and 28th week of the pregnancy.
