Childhood diabetes is growing increasingly common. Children can have type I diabetes, type II diabetes, and Maturity-onset Diabetes in the Young, which is a very rare type of the disease and is caused by a single gene defect that causes faulty insulin secretion. Childhood diabetes can be tragic, but it doesn’t have to be impossible to live with. Childhood diabetes can be controlled and even prevented. Type II diabetes used to occur mainly in overweight, middle-aged adults. Type II diabetes happens after years of insulin resistance, which causes an inadequate response to insulin. But now type II diabetes is common in children. Childhood diabetes often develops in children who are overweight or obese. Some children who develop childhood diabetes show a wide variety of symptoms, including urinating often, blurred vision, and a significant loss of weight. Other children who develop childhood diabetes do not show any symptoms at all. At least, not immediately. Obesity is not the only risk factor for children who develop childhood diabetes. Other risk factors include having a close member of the family with type II diabetes, or being a member of a high-risk ethnic group. Being over the age of ten also increases the risk of developing childhood diabetes. Related LinksJuvenile diabetes Juvenile diabetes is the former, and common, name for type 1 diabetes.
