Cardiovascular Health

While heart disease is a major problem among health-conscious Americans, proper cardiovascular nutrition will greatly reduce the risk. Most American diets are high in both cholesterol and fat, which causes plaque to build up on the heart’s arteries, causing heart disease.
Proper cardiovascular nutrition involves a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and low in such items as dairy products and junk food. While red meat should also be avoided, eating fish is beneficial to personal cardiovascular nutrition. This is due to its omega-3 fatty acids, which can lower cholesterol and help prevent arrthymias. Olive oil is also known to be good in maintaining cardiovascular nutrition.
Sodium, however, is a cardiovascular nutrition hazard. Reducing salt intake in one’s diet has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease by 25 percent. While the Salt Institute disagrees with this information, most cardiovascular nutritionists agree.
Cardiovascular nutrition is most effective when combined with aerobic exercise. A lifestyle that combines cardiovascular exercise and cardiovascular nutrition has been shown to effectively reduce cholesterol. While certain factors in a person, such as their sex, age and family history cannot be changed, proper cardiovascular nutrition and exercise can drastically decrease the risk.
