Blood sugar is a term that refers to the amount of glucose in the blood. Glucose travels through the blood stream and is the main source of energy in the body for cells. The blood sugar level is tightly regulated by the body, mainly through levels of insulin, created by the pancreas, and glucagons. When your body fails to regulate the blood sugar levels properly, it can result in hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia is consistently high blood sugar. Diabetes is marked by hyperglycemia, or persistently high blood sugar. The opposite of hyperglycemia, or diabetes, is hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia is the state of having consistently low blood sugar levels. When blood sugar gets too low, resulting in hypoglycemia, the physical symptoms include lethargy, impaired mental functioning, and loss of consciousness. When blood sugar levels get too high, resulting in hyperglycemia, the physical symptoms include eye, kidney, and nerve damage, as well as other physical symptoms related to diabetes. If you exhibit any of the symptoms of low or high blood sugar, you should consult a physician as soon as possible. Long-term, untreated low or high blood sugar can result in dire consequences to the health and even death. |
