Anabolic steroids

Anabolic steroids are hormonal steroids related to testosterone. The anabolic steroids function to increase protein synthesis in the cells. Anabolic steroids result in anabolism in the cellular tissue. Anabolic processes “build up” organs and tissue. Increases in bone and muscle mass is a result of anabolic processes; therefore, the purpose of taking anabolic steroids is to increase the size and mass of muscle groups. The use of anabolic steroids is banned by all major sports leagues, all professional sports organizations, and the Olympics, because using anabolic steroids gives the athlete an edge. Anabolic steroids can also be dangerous and have long-term affects on the health, including the increase of acne, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and the increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Other side effects of taking anabolic steroids can include liver cancer and a change in the shape of the heart, which could lead to sudden cardiac arrest.

Often athletes will take anabolic steroids because the short-term advantages seem to outweigh the long-term risks. But if an athlete is caught taking anabolic steroids, the consequences can be severe, ranging from temporary suspensions to permanent banning from the athletic organization. Anabolic steroids are prescribed for a variety of medical uses, but like most helpful drugs, they can be, and are, abused.
