Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Protein is necessary for the proper functioning of your body, as it is a source of energy, as well as the building blocks for your muscles and organs. Amino acids can be combined together to form a huge number of different proteins. There are twenty standard proteinogenic amino acids, but ten of those are referred to as “essential” amino acids because the body cannot synthesize those amino acids itself. The ten essential amino acids must be consumed through nutrition. Some sources of protein provide a “complete protein”, or all ten essential amino acids. All animal proteins are complete and contain all ten essential amino acids. Soy also contains all ten essential amino acids. There are also four conditionally essential amino acids. These “conditionally” essential amino acids are essential in young children who have not quite developed the ability to synthesize the amino acids themselves.
Nutrition that does not have the essential amino acids can be a poor protein substitute, because the body can convert it to fat or carbohydrates. The balance of amino acids is essential for a high degree of net protein utilization. That being said, essential amino acids can be obtained from strictly vegetarian sources, and it’s possible for vegetarians to get all their daily requirements. |
